Understanding Philanthropy Resources in Community Development

Topic: Fundraising

Description:

This article provides an overview of foundations and philanthropy trends, offers insight into the programs and initiatives that foundations are launching to ensure that more people have access to grant funding. It describes the types of philanthropic foundations, giving by source and use, and how COVID-19 giving has negatively impacted community-based organizations.

The author also shares specific examples of how Main Street America is developing relationships with national and local foundations that have supported community economic development over the past several years. With their help, MSA bridges the gap by connecting and partnering with community groups to provide capacity building and technical support required to effectively lead commercial district revitalization work.

11 Trends in Philanthropy for 2021

Topic: Fundraising

Description:

This annual report, now in its fifth year, identifies and articulates eleven trends in philanthropy for 2021. Produced by the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University, draws on the talent and experience of eleven faculty and staff as they address topics as varied as social justice funding, the globalization of philanthropy, the sector’s role in building public trust, and how data is transforming philanthropy.

Comments:

Thoughtful and provocative, 11 Trends in Philanthropy for 2021 will shape thinking in the nonprofit sector well beyond the current year. Thoroughly researched, with more than 120 cited references, this compilation invites further scrutiny of the topics it addresses. The authors do no shy away from provocative subjects, such as philanthropy and reparations, and the blurring distinction between philanthropy and business. While the report is daunting – 28 pages long, not counting references – it is an inviting read because of the organizational structure.

Measuring Fundraising Effectiveness: Why the Cost of Fundraising Isn’t Enough

Topic: Fundraising

Description:

These national institutions collectively developed and recommended a new, more holistic, framework for measuring fundraising effectiveness. Three primary measures are the foundation for this new integrated framework: total fundraising net – the bottom-line results; the cost of fundraising (an important, but often overemphasized, measure of efficiency), and the “dependency quotient” as a new barometer for risk. This report provides the formulas to calculate each measure, and how to balance risk and reward.

Comments:

A companion PowerPoint articulates the conversation boards and leadership teams should have regarding how to measure fundraising effectiveness.

Market Drops and Crisis: Fundraising Lessons and Your Lighthouse

Topic: Fundraising

Description:

This brief post recounts the author’s experiences when dealing with major donors during the stock market downturn in 2008. He applies those experiences to the current situation and extracts two primary “lessons learned:” 1) there are always donors capable of and wanting to give, so don’t be afraid to ask; 2) stay in contact, plant the seeds for future giving, and provide adequate time for donors to decide.

Comments:

The author’s reliance on personal experience dealing with donors during the 2008 recession and following the World Trade Center attacks makes his subsequent findings even more valuable to current circumstances. He also pointedly reminds readers – using historical data going back 40 years – that while giving is influenced by economic factors, it has never “dropped off a cliff.”

Topic: Fundraising

Description:

Analysis report from 124 nonprofit leaders from across the U.S. shared revenue stories and insights into the future impacted by the pandemic and other crises. Not surprising, earned revenue from programs is the single source of most concern. Reduced need and demand for services is also a worry. Fewer opportunities to connect with current and potential donors, often due to event cancellations, also create concern. However, there are also some “silver linings” in this report revealed through an optimism based on generosity of donors and funders, and other positive signs.
